Areas of Business

  • Transportation team – corridor design, signalized and roundabout intersection design, traffic & roadway/highway design, transit design, stormwater design.
  • Utilities team – water, wastewater, and reclaimed water design, treatment, conveyance and pumping.
  • Stormwater team – specializes in collection, treatment, pump stations and basin studies.
  • Environmental team – environmental studies and wildlife surveys, biological assessments, environmental documentation (SEPA/NEPA/JARPA), shoreline development, floodplain management, Endangered Species Act compliance, fish habitat and passage and stormwater permitting.
  • Survey team – boundary, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) control, drone, scan, topographic surveys. We also offer research and discovery, monumentation setting and recovery, construction staking, preparation of legal descriptions and more.

Our survey department works with our in-house engineers and the environmental department along with public agencies, developers, contractors, and architects to provide surveying for infrastructure projects and site development.

Job Description

Skillings is hiring a Senior Survey Technician. Candidate must be flexible for completing in-office project tasks to assist the Survey Manager and be able to perform field duties as necessary.   The candidate should have knowledge of the maintenance of field equipment, setup, operations, and proper field procedures to ensure efficient and accurate field data collection and add value to our survey team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 years Minimum Survey Party Chief experience
  • High school diploma
  • Valid driver’s license, and safe driving record
  • Ability to use a robotic total station and GPS/RTK
  • Ability to use data collection software for field to finish
  • Experience preforming topographic mapping
  • Flexibility to travel (mostly within western Washington)
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently work in an office and outdoor field environment
  • Perform quality control checks on-site to verify the quality of work
  • Motivated and growth orientated person
  • Proven excellent communications with staff and clients
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Work alone or part of a team with the appropriate field equipment
  • Work effectively and maintain a good attitude with our field and office team
  • Daily processing of data, including evaluating accuracy and sufficiency. Ensures compliance with applicable regulations, professional and industry standards related to boundary calculations, legal descriptions, etc.
  • Take field notes including depiction sketches
  • Maintain quality field procedures

Preferred Qualifications

  • College, tech school and/or land surveying certifications are preferred
  • Provide field calculations and data processing experience
  • Software proficiency in Carlson Survey and Bentley: In Roads, Open Roads and Civil 3D
  • Experience with equipment calibration and maintenance
  • Ability to operate Topcon total station and GPS receivers.
  • Trimble Business Center Experience
  • Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT) Certification – State of Washington

  • Prefer candidates with current or past coursework in AutoCAD/Civil 3D
  • Technical writing ability

 Pay:

Selected interns will be paid $20 per hour.

Our utilities team works on water, wastewater, and reclaimed water design, treatment, conveyance and pumping. More specific design responsibilities include preparing plans and specifications for the design and construction of water or wastewater systems, calculations, analysis and study-level reports for treatment, distribution, and collection systems, determining appropriate design methods, equipment sizing and selection and working directly with the owner and other project stakeholders.

Our stormwater team specializes in collection, treatment, pump stations and basin studies as well as hydraulic analysis and culvert replacement/fish passage design.
We’re looking for someone who wants to cultivate relationships with existing and potential clients to pursue new projects.

One of the things our employees love most is the opportunity to do a wide variety of projects. This includes managing engineering design and plan production, overseeing and mentoring technical staff, participating in business development and proposals, and collaborating with our survey and environmental departments.

Other Duties Include

  • Plan, direct, and monitor all aspects of large multidiscipline transportation projects or medium-sized projects with high degree of technical complexity
  • Produce and coordinate scope, schedule, and budget for several projects concurrently
  • Conduct project meetings with internal staff and clients to solve technical challenges
  • Coordinate staffing and workload through project development to complete projects on schedule
  • Implement QA/QC procedures
  • Maintain professional engineering registration
  • Establish and maintain client relations and lead contractual, design and production meetings
  • Coordinate and execute marketing strategies with the Marketing Department
  • Supervise project staff
  • Provide engineering training and mentoring for junior staff
  • Perform other duties as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
  • Professional Engineer Registration in Washington
  • 15+ years of Civil Engineering experience
  • 5+ years of Project Management experience
  • Demonstrated business development and strategic planning skills
  • Good communication, leadership, planning and mentoring skills
  • MS Office and MS Project experience is required
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active partner in both project and marketing work

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience on WSDOT Projects
  • Experience developing winning proposals
  • PMP
